2013 Graduation Showcase: Diamantes
"Diamantes" is a 2013 Graduation Showcase. "Diamantes", which is pronouced as "Dia-man-tes" in Spanish which translates to "Diamonds" was used instead of the english language as the event title because english has been used over and over again over the years for the past graduation shows. This is also a way of showing the form of boundary breaking, that design transcends all borders regardless of languages and backgrounds. The reason why this concept was chosen is because diamonds are very rare, precious, and valuable gems. any do now know that diamonds are made up of the same things which coal and pencil leads are made of - Carbon. It is only under high temperature, pressure and polishing that it becomes something so valuable. Therefore, if we were to look at a real diamond, we are able to see that a diamond is actually made up with many different parts and pieces inside and if you were to break the diamond apart, they would all become different fragments which stand alone but yet at the same time are still differently valuable. Upon shattering the diamond, they are all of different shapes and sizes which are just like design students. We are all faced with intense pressure, having our skills honed over the past 3 years in school is just like polishing yet we still burn with fiery passion just like the temperature of how diamonds are formed.
In actual fact, we may all look different but we are all the same on the inside as we are all equally unique and there is something which we are proud of and valued for. Although in many different pieces, if these pieces were to be placed back together, they would form a beautiful gem. Thus this is the rationale behind the name of the Graduation Show - The pieces of diamonds depicts the graduating students who come together as one for this event to showcase their talents after 3 years of being polished and carved under intense pressure to be who they are today.
This was a all-rounded project design and direction for a graduation showcase for Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts 2013, Design & Media Diploma Show.
